The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said that 32 people die everyday because of people driving under the influence (DUI). Unfortunately, the numbers aren’t getting any better. 2020 has seen a 14% increase in drunk-driving deaths from the preceding year (2019) despite the fact that most people are confined indoors as a result of the lockdown placed by the ongoing pandemic.
The burgeoning figures relating to drunk driving are concerning. In fact, the NHTSA had stated that a good chunk of traffic-related accidents (30%) are attributed to the actions of those who may have too much to drink.

Drunk driving is considered a felony if a person is convicted of four DUIs in 10 years, or if they’ve been found to have injured someone while drunk driving, as well as if they were with a minor.
The state of California passed the Senate Bill 731 in July 2023 allowing a drunk driver convicted of a felony on or after 2005 to seal their criminal records as long as they have not made another felony offense for four years. This Bill also stipulates that they need to have already completed the terms of incarceration, probation, supervision, and parole.
There are some important exceptions to note. For one, this does not include felons who’ve been found to be guilty of serious and violent crimes in which case they would need to petition to have their records sealed.
It’s also worth knowing that even though a person’s DUI records are clear, they would still need to disclose to potential employers that they had a criminal record in the past. So while it is true that you can technically still erase your DUI records, they may still haunt you well after you have successfully expunged them.
